“Hey, what are you doing here, old man? Aren’t they a little young for you?”
Taylor Darling looked up in surprise, and smiled at his old friend. “Izzy! I forgot you were teaching here this year!” The two men shook hands, grinning at each other like co-conspirators after a successful coup. “We just got back from vacation,” he nodded in the direction of the dormitory where he had just left his daughter. “Got the little angel all moved in to her new room. Hands off, by the way.” He pointed warningly at his old friend, but Izzy Winters just threw back his head and laughed, careful not to let his hat fall off.
“Ah, the lovely Fiona. Well, she might be my soul mate,” grinned Izzy. “You never know.”
“Forget it,” smiled Taylor. “She’s found her soul mate, and she’s happier than I’ve ever seen her before. So don’t tempt her!”
“She is very tempting,” Izzy smiled. “Speaking of, how’s your wife doing?”
“Oh, she’s great,” Taylor said reassuringly. “She’s doing well.”
“Have you seen her lately?”
“Yeah, just last night, actually. I stopped by to check that the stake was still in place and that the wards were still up. Speaking of wards, Fiona mentioned something about the south end of the campus that kind of worried me.”
Izzy sighed. “Yeah, someone’s been messing with the wards down there. I was actually on my way to check it out.”
“Let me come with you,” Taylor offered.
“I’m not going to refuse your help, Mr. A+ in ‘The Practical Warding and Restraint of Otherworldly Creatures.’ Why aren’t you a teacher here, instead of me?” asked Izzy as they started walking towards the south ward of the campus.
Taylor laughed. “I can’t stay here for five months straight! Those wards would come right down, and she’d have one of her minions take the stake out. I’d rather just get divorced.”
The two men looked at each other and shuddered in mock horror. “You win,” grinned Izzy. “No divorce. I’ll stay here and sample all the nubile young witches, you travel the world and spend all your wife’s money.”
Taylor chuckled. “You’re such an asshole. Let’s take a look at these wards.”
There are three types of people in the world:
Humans. You know what they are. The most important thing about them is that Humans can be possessed.
Witches. Witches can be followers of the Dark Arts or of the Light. There is no Grey (nor Purple, for that matter) because the world has not advanced sufficiently to allow people to stand without choosing a side. You are a witch. You must choose a side as part of your character creation. Most witches follow the same path as their parents, but this is not required. Once you have chosen a side, you cannot switch until after you have Mastered your Craft and paid the requisite price.
Others. Genesis 6:2 – When the sons (and daughters) of God saw the daughters (and sons) of men, they saw that they were beautiful and took them as mates and filled the earth with their children, who were born of man with the powers of the air. Witches are technically ‘others’, and just like ‘others’, they do not have their own souls the way that humans do. Others covers all mystical human-appearing beings, such as a changeling, (half) celestial, (half) infernal, vampire, werewolf, etc. However, if an other has the Power, they are classified as a witch.
Monsters. Isiah 14:29 – …Out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent. Mystical and magical beings that cannot appear as humans, such as ghosts, dragons, etc. are considered monsters. All monsters are extremely dangerous, in one way or another. Monsters can automatically detect the presence of a witch among humans, but not if a witch is alone or when there are no humans present.
Angels and Demons. Job 38:4-7 – Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons (and daughters) of God shouted for joy? They have always existed, and will always exist. They are the Companions of God, the Supporters of his Throne; they are the defiant children who Rebelled against his will, the Fallen Ones who lead mankind astray. Angels do God’s will; demons act as they desire. Whether this is still His will is a matter of severe contention among mortals. They are the ancestors of all witches and most others, as well as the genesis of some monsters. Angels and Demons are effectively immortal, but can be banished back to the Celestial or Infernal realms under certain circumstances. Both Angels and Demons prefer the company of humans to that of witches.
